Health leaders unite to improve First Nations Health outcomes in Far North Queensland

Health system leaders from across Far North Queensland have come together to sign a new Statement of Commitment to improve access and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The agreement, signed in the aptly named Dreamtime Room at Wuchopperen Health Service, affirms the FNQ Regional Health Partners, a collective dedicated to advancing shared priorities and strengthening collaboration across the region.

This marks only the second time such a high‑level regional accord has been reached. The last was in 2018, when health system leaders endorsed the landmark Stronger Mob Living Longer regional health plan.

The new Statement of Commitment lays the foundation for renewed partnership, coordinated action, and a unified focus on improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“This is a significant step forward,” a NATSIHA spokesperson said. “It signals a shared determination to work together on the issues that matter most to our communities.”

Signatories to the Statement of Commitment are: NATSIHA, the Torres and Cape Hospital and Heath Service, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, Checkup, Royal Flying Doctor Service and North Queensland Primary Health Network.

Work will now begin on designing and progressing a set of shared regional health priorities.
