Strengthening Collective Leadership - NATSIHA Hosts Inaugural Members’ Workshop in Cairns

The Northern Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Alliance (NATSIHA) proudly convened its first ever Members’ Workshop on 1 and 2 July 2025 in Cairns, bringing together Chief Executive Officers, Chairpersons, and Board Members from across the Alliance. Representatives from seven of the nine NATSIHA member organisations were present, with apologies received from Torres Health and the Northern Peninsula Area Family and Community Services (NPA FACS).

Honouring Legacy, Building the Future

The workshop was officially opened by NATSIHA Chair Andrew Malcolm, who reflected on the significance of this historic gathering. Uncle Les Collins, QAIHC Hall of Famer, grounded the event with a powerful reflection on the history of the community controlled health movement in Far North Queensland, acknowledging the resilience and advocacy that continue to shape NATSIHA’s direction.

Key Outcomes from the Workshop

Over two days, members engaged in robust discussions on governance, strategy, and the evolving health landscape. Outcomes and commitments included:

  • NATSIHA’s Role Affirmed – Members unanimously endorsed NATSIHA as the Regional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Organisation (RATSICCHO) for Far North Queensland.
  • Strategic Plan Endorsed – The 2025–2028 Strategic Plan was endorsed, pending final feedback from Torres Health and NPA FACS.
  • Strengthening Governance – Agreement to review the NATSIHA Constitution, co-design a Members Charter, and establish new governance structures, including a CEO Forum, Chair Forum, and Regional Clinical Governance Committee.
  • Collaborative Protocols – Commitment to formal protocols guiding NATSIHA’s relationship with QAIHC and NACCHO, strengthening engagement at regional, state, and national levels.
  • Annual Gathering – Members agreed to convene an annual board gathering to align strategy, governance, and collective advocacy.
  • Business Case Advocacy – NATSIHA will continue engagement with Queensland Health on its Business Case to secure sustained regional investment.
  • Membership Contributions – Members to consider reinstating fees to maintain momentum while awaiting Business Case outcomes.

A Turning Point for Regional Leadership

This inaugural workshop marked a turning point for NATSIHA’s collective leadership, reinforcing unity of purpose and the Alliance’s commitment to stronger collaboration, cultural strength, and improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Far North Queensland.
